Bitpedia is the digital media encyclopedia, a collection of the best
available identifying, descriptive, and editorial metadata about all
kinds of digital files.
Bitpedia content is built by a worldwide community of volunteer contributors,
and is available for free reuse under the
Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0
license.
Currently, Bitpedia information is in the form of
Tickets, structured
metadata summaries which exist one per file. Files are identified by their
Bitprints, distinctive digital fingerprints calculated mathematically
by examining the file.
The Bitpedia project is sponsored and stewarded by
Bitzi,
a San Francisco based open-content publishing company. More information
is available at the
Bitpedia page
there or the
Bitpedia Blog. Bitzi
offers a free tool called the
Bitcollider
for calculating Bitprints, seeding Bitpedia Tickets with initial data,
and looking up Bitpedia Tickets for specific files.
You can also browse, search, and contribute Bitpedia content via the
Bitzi website and other
Bitpedia-Powered applications.
